• Description: 1968 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible This beautiful Corvette convertible with a very nice and very rare color combination, graces our Hallowed Halls here at Classic Auto Mall.  This shark has been treated to a no expense spared frame off restoration, sports it’s numbers matching L79 drivetrain and those nice chrome bumpers and black rockers just adds to the exterior Corvette mystique.  A fully documented restoration with tons of receipts and invoices lets you know you’re on the right path with this restored example.   Exterior A 992 very nice Corvette Bronze respray in the correct color match shows very nicely with no checks or cracks, just smooth deep burnt orange paint.  The sculpted body is highlighted on the front quarters by shark-like gill venting with some chrome accenting.  The hidden headlight grille and a spear like hood bump is long and perfect.  A black rocker cover with a strip of stainless accenting above is reserved for the rockers.  On the back the curvaceous rear quarters frame the deep dish Chevrolet rally wheels and raised white letter tires. The rear has a split chromed bumper, roll pan tailpipes with bezels, and 4 round pristine tail lights.  Note the black canvas convertible top is in fine shape with a clear plastic rear window.  It’s hard to find fault here and the look and stance of this year is quickly becoming one of my favs, along with the rounded look of the 76-77 versions. Interior Correct and rarely seen Dark Orange vinyl is in this 1968 model year, and it covers the buckets, door panels, and dash.  This creates a beautiful combination to the exterior Corvette Bronze.  No fading and very slight wear is seen on the drivers chair, however overall it presents in very good condition.  The center console is wrapped in Dark Orange and uses aluminum highlighting as well as some black and a large chrome shift knob to set everything off.  Also, a wood steering wheel adds a nice touch to the overall interior.  The carpeting throughout appears as like new in dark orange as well.  Nice deep inset gauges for the driver as well as the cluster of 5 in the center keep you up to date of the car’s vitals. Drivetrain A rebuilt and retaining the standard bore 327ci/350hp L79 numbers matching mill is backed by a 4-speed Muncie manual transmission which is also numbers matching and has a new Perfection clutch, throwout bearing and pressure plate.  This combination is residing in an overall clean engine bay.  Power brakes are an extra option.  Rochester provides the rebuilt 4-barrel carburetor, however it is not original to this car.  The rear axle weighs in at 4.11 ratio with Positraction, although the stamping code is very hard to read.  Some bright and shiny chrome dresses up the engine for the valve covers, air cleaner lid and distributor cover, and nice rust-free manifolds are also noted.  Our consignor states that the ignition system has been upgraded with a Pertronix electronic unit within the original distributor. Undercarriage A gander underside reveals 4-wheel power disc brakes with rebuilt calipers and stainless steel lines. A near perfect condition frame and floor construction as well as a clean suspension is seen here as well.  Suspension is fully independent for the front and rear and has been rebuilt with new bushings everywhere.  Dual stainless steel exhaust is nice and clean rust free and we note new fuel lines running from the tank to the mill. Drive-Ability I liken this test drive to driving a piece of fine art sculpture, and it performed as it should for the drivetrain.  For the convenience factor its hard to beat, yet I noticed that the reverse lights did not illuminate and the radio did not belt out any tunes.
